A Brief History of Facebook

It is hard to imaging that Facebook has only been around for 6 years. If you’re not a part of Facebook where have you been hiding. It all started as a way for students at Harvard to keep in touch and has quickly become a cultural icon of the modern era. Founded in 2004 by Mark Zucherberg, a Harvard University student, it did not take long for Facebook to spread to most of the other Ivy League schools and then on to every college and university across America.
By 2007 it was a worldwide phenomenon, with sales of more than 300 million dollars. Facebook is currently the biggest social network on the internet with over 500 million members. The amount of traffic that Facebook receives daily often surpasses that of Google search.
The main reason for its lightning fast accent is that it allows people to easily connect with each other twenty-four hours a day. Members can find out what their friends are doing by viewing their friends wall. The Facebook wall is a place where friends and family members post their thoughts, activities, and daily updates on anything they find interesting in their lives. Friends can post comments, watch videos, or look at pictures just by logging on and viewing each others walls.
Many businesses and clubs are also taking advantage of the power and ease of Facebook. They post information that informs their customers or members about special events, sales, or meetings. It is a very cheap and effective method of advertising and communicating that is getting more and more popular every year.
Another aspect to the popularity of Facebook is the fact that it is free. Facebook gets all of its revenue from advertisers, not their users. The private company has plans of going public in a few years so it will probably remain a free service, like Google, forever.
It seems like everyone you meet has a personal or business Facebook page and its popularity shows no signs of slowing. From college site to worldwide brand, Facebook is a great way for people to stay in touch quickly, easily, and free.
